Dyslexia and Occupational Therapy – The OT Toolbox

by dyslexiacampus

We have recently come across the fantastic work that The OT Toolbox is doing at their site. Please check out their site for more fantastic information regarding OT and neurodiversity. They have a wonderful Dyslexia Checklist for purchase here

In a recent blog post they expound upon how OT can assist dyslexic learners.

These were our takeaways from their observations. Please read the full post for more information.

Occupational therapy (OT) plays a crucial role in supporting individuals with dyslexia in improving their daily functioning, particularly in reading and writing tasks. Dyslexia can significantly hinder these fundamental skills, and OT practitioners are well-equipped to address these challenges. Here’s how OT can support dyslexic learners:

  1. Functional Occupation: Reading is an essential daily occupation, influencing various aspects of our lives, including safety, work, school, and communication. OT intervention aims to ensure that dyslexic individuals can effectively engage in these tasks.
  2. Health Literacy: Dyslexic individuals must have the ability to understand health information to ensure their well-being. OT practitioners advocate for their clients and help them navigate the healthcare system and comprehend critical health advice.
  3. Identification: Occupational therapists are uniquely positioned to identify dyslexia warning signs in clients. This skill is particularly valuable when dyslexia co-occurs with other diagnoses, such as ADHD, autism, language processing disorders, dysgraphia (writing difficulties), dyscalculia (math difficulties), and dyspraxia (coordination difficulties). OT providers can also address executive functioning challenges that often accompany dyslexia.
  4. Multisensory Approach: Dyslexic students benefit from a multisensory approach to learning, which involves engaging multiple neural pathways simultaneously. This approach aligns with the Science of Reading (SOR) or Orton Gillingham method, emphasizing a detailed understanding of the English language, sound-symbol correspondences, syllable patterns, and orthography (letter-sound connections).
  5. Collaboration: OT practitioners can collaborate with dyslexia interventionists, who undergo extensive training and supervision, to ensure comprehensive support for dyslexic individuals. Certification organizations such as OGA, IMSLEC, and ALTA provide qualified interventionists.
  6. Executive Functioning: Dyslexia often impacts executive functioning, which can affect various aspects of learning and daily life. Occupational therapists have assessments and interventions to address executive functioning challenges and can play a crucial role in supporting students with dyslexia.
  7. Reading and Daily Tasks: Reading is essential for various daily tasks, from following instructions to cooking, shopping, making appointments, and healthcare management. OT providers help dyslexic individuals develop their reading skills, enabling them to participate fully in daily life activities, education, and work.
  8. Advocacy and Resources: Occupational therapists advocate for their clients and help them access the support and resources they need. They can utilize tools like “The Dyslexia Checklist” to identify specific needs and red flags in dyslexic individuals, promoting early intervention and improved literacy outcomes.

In summary, occupational therapy plays a vital role in addressing the functional challenges associated with dyslexia. By targeting reading and writing skills, collaborating with dyslexia interventionists, and advocating for clients, OT practitioners contribute to enhancing the overall quality of life for dyslexic learners.
