As much as Carner describes these experiences as opening up the possibility of creative expression as a viable career path, he also speaks about the difficulty of being neurodiverse. He has ADHD and is also dyslexic. It’s therefore no surprise that he found formal education challenging at times. These difficulties coupled with Carner’s issues with reading out loud were used by others to make him “feel stupid”, he tells me.

Belafonte was born in 1927 in working-class Harlem, New York, and spent eight years of his childhood in his impoverished parents’ native Jamaica. He returned to New York for high school but struggled with dyslexia and dropped out in his early teens.

During The Kelly Clarkson Show on Tuesday, Kelly became emotional while talking to guest Henry Winkler, who is dyslexic and has written dozens of children’s books.

It has to be in the context of a woman doing what I think I’m doing, something that empowers my life story. It means that now, suddenly, with all my insecurities, my dyslexia, the notes fall apart in the guitar — but I don’t care and I put myself out there. And it empowers me to say, “I have my insecurities, but I overcome them and I empower myself with the self-esteem of a woman and I go out there and feel brave.” I removed my insecurities.

Gwen’s rise to stardom did not come without its obstacles. She goes on to tell me that she does not think many people realize that she struggled so much in school, revealing to me that she has dyslexia and ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder). She says it was not until she wrote her first song, unaware that she even had it in her to do so, that she felt she had found her calling, saying, “God just put it in me and it just came out.”
