Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver: Writing for Children With Dyslexia

by Russ Loyd

In a recent Writer’s Digest interview, actor and author Henry Winkler and his co-author Lin Oliver discuss their mission to support children with dyslexia through their popular “Hank Zipzer” series. Inspired by Winkler’s own childhood struggles with dyslexia, the books follow the humorous and heartfelt experiences of Hank, a young boy who has learning differences but an incredible imagination. Through Hank’s relatable stories, Winkler and Oliver aim to empower children with dyslexia to view their differences as strengths rather than limitations.

Winkler shares his personal journey with dyslexia, revealing that he was not diagnosed until adulthood. This late discovery drives his commitment to creating books that validate the experiences of neurodiverse children, reminding them they are not alone. Oliver, a prolific children’s book author, adds that they intentionally designed Hank’s stories to be both entertaining and educational, providing young readers with engaging narratives and, crucially, accessible text. Their collaborative approach focuses on creating stories with humor, resilience, and positive messages, appealing to all children, including those with learning challenges.

The interview emphasizes the importance of representation in literature and the power of storytelling to foster empathy and understanding. Winkler and Oliver encourage parents, teachers, and caregivers to celebrate the strengths of children with dyslexia, helping them develop confidence in their unique abilities. Their work serves as a reminder of how inclusive literature can inspire young readers to embrace their differences and recognize their own potential.
